❓Compared with others, my salary ...
Issue #98 (22 Apr) – 20+ jobs, business & strategy focus; GDR kino closing; automated shops on Sundays?; how to vote on 9th of June; Humane AI drama; game theory video you should see.
Programming note: In the first week of the release, the Salary Trends report was featured in Sifted, 20 Percent and Medianet. Techeu, CNN & Handelsblatt still thinking if they will publish. Someone also shared it on my beloved r/berlin, and of course, it got a couple of “It’s biased!” “Useless!” and “Can’t be!” comments. Still, with all its downsides, it’s a great project, and I stand by it, so we’ll look into more data, for example:
Yuri is interested in salaries by management level and in the adjusted gender gap,
Dominik would like to see more details about Product Managers,
M.D. wanted to know how other roles compared.
How about you? Let me know, and we’ll have a look!
We will also add features to the dashboard (e.g. education). I will be including more details here but also on Instagram.

🇩🇪 Berlin & Other good stuff

🎥 Kino International, a former GDR “premiere” cinema, which celebrated 60. years last November, will close for two years of renovation on the 13th of May. If you want to catch it in its current glory, here is the programme. It’s worth it.
✅ The €29 ticket for Zones AB is back from the 1st of July, but you’ll need to commit for a year. Like many relationships in Berlin, this ticket is (politically) complicated as well. (RBB, 🇩🇪) BVG will also experiment with intervals instead of time schedules for selected buses and U-Bahns starting in June. They want to prevent situations when delays cause two buses to appear at almost the same time.
🇪🇺 Everyone with an EU passport can also vote in Berlin in the coming EU elections on the 9th of June. Here are instructions on how.
🤖 In Germany, we have constitutionally forbidden Sunday shopping. Now imagine a shop run completely by robots. Could this automated shop be open on Sundays? Apparently not. The legal battle (Verdi vs Tegut) over automated shops in Fulda started four years ago, and the judge said the small-service store still qualified as a shop. (FT, €) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Last week Marques Brownlee did his job reviewing the Humane AI pin (essentially a “ChatGPT” in a pin)—a product developed by the “ex-famous company” types that underestimated the difficulty of developing new products. Parts of the feel-good-internet erupted in shock and called him a distasteful company killer. I’d sign Ben Thompson’s analysis, which made me respect MKBHD even more (the video is in the article, too). GOAT. Excerpt:
Career: This essay is a good primer on How to Recognize What You’re Really, Really Good At. So, what’s success? Spending your days doing mostly the things you love.
Career: Here are ten well-explained AI terms for beginners. I’ve been lucky enough to learn a lot about it in the last year, and the most fascinating thing for me is that when the model performs weirdly when prompting, there is no number you can call besides trial and error.
Timeless: Tit for Tat always wins. A must-see video about the game theory, the beauty of cooperation and being nice to people. What Game Theory Reveals About Life, The Universe, and Everything by Veritasium (25+ min).
Reddit choice of the week is this gorgeous graffiti by 1UP crew. Also seen is Paradox Paradise left and right. If you want to see it live, go here. Shall we do a Street art tour with Tina? Yay!
💬 Briefly:
😔 Bad news: Tesla -10% (-300 in Grünheide, rumours about 3000 denied).
Stats: On the 1st of May, the minimum wage in Berlin will rise from €13.00 to €13.69 gross per hour.
Grocery delivery news: Flink raised $100M from most of the existing investors, maybe also to fight off Knuspr (formerly known as Bringmeister), which is starting in Berlin on the 22nd of April. Crowded! WiWo (🇩🇪) reported that Getir might pull out of Germany.
Thai retailer Central Group bought the remaining share of bankrupt KaDeWe. According to RBB, the company was struggling for years. (🇩🇪) Extremely high rents from their owner (Signa) surely didn’t help. Financial engineering until you hit the wall?
After a stellar 2023 performance, Q1 sales of ASML (microchip equipment producer with a presence in Berlin) came in at 21.6% lower than expected.
ArrakisTaiwan-based TMSC also lowered the outlook.BCG (consulting) intends to hire 1000 new consultants. Careers. (FAZ, €)
RBB reports that Apple Maps started to record German streets for their “street view”. This time they’ll also do it on foot (in Berlin between 23.5 and 31.7). The whole thing should be documented by mid-August.
Manager Magazin (€, 🇩🇪) reports that Enpal started the year poorly with losses in double-digit millions.
In this LinkedIn update, you can see who is in the extended leadership group of Startup Verband, the most important lobby group & think-tank for the German tech scene.
Almost a quarter of checked Ubers, Bolts & Co. were blocked by Landesamt für Bürger- und Ordnungsangelegenheiten (Labo) this Friday because of license problems. (RBB, 🇩🇪) Prices should go up.
