Programming note: Based on plenty of feedback, I am thinking of changing the selection of the jobs. Let me know what you think in the poll. Last week I also published my new mini-project, open-sourced anonymous salary survey.
Please help spread the word about the survey. We need as many responses as possible to get a good dataset.

😎 Cool stuff:
we did not look or offer anything cool this week
did you maybe write something cool to share? or your friend did?
do you do art? music? independent event? starting a business? opened a store? need initial support? look for test users for your product?
🔍 Searching for roles:
Jed is a recently transplanted and experienced New York/USA-admitted lawyer looking for in-house work or trying to help those trying to navigate the USA legal system.
Punit is looking for Brand Strategy or Brand Marketing roles. Experienced in large-scale projects like brand repositioning, segmentation, brand architecture, and product launch marketing campaigns.
🤩 Would you consider supporting handpicked?
I love working on handpicked. If you find value in my work, I would love you to become a supporter. Not only will this help sustain it, but you will also invest in your growth and learning. Thank you for considering it. 🙏 It is the minimum allowed by the Substack platform: €5.00 per month and €30.00 per year. Not even a good night out.
Here are supporter benefits so you can see what you get.

🇩🇪 Berlin & Other good stuff
👎 Last week I mentioned the uselessness of reviews, and here is even more evidence, this time for GitHub stars. Markets in everything!
💩 Some of Berlin’s startups are laying off people generally badly needed in Germany (137k IT specialists missing), and many are now considering other cities. (🇩🇪) Given these facts, it’s bizarre how hard it is to get here, especially if you aren’t from the EU. As a bonus, you get bureaucratic hurdles and absolutely terrible housing situation. Berlin must do much more and stop f*cking around, or we will find out. Luckily for Berlin, many companies in other cities still think they can keep speaking German only. Related discussion on Reddit is also interesting; a lot of talk about salaries.
🇷🇺 According to official Russian sources (🇷🇺), since the war started, 100k IT people have emigrated, and 80% of them still work remotely for Russian companies. There were ideas of a total ban of remote work, but yeah, good luck with that. Here is an additional read on the state of Russian tech, dealing with talent migration, challenges at Yandex and potential stagnation because of this madness.
🧐 If you are considering a career change or extension, you could become an ESG manager. Parts hype, parts need. According to Handelsblatt, it could also be well paid (200k?). (🇩🇪) I am a bit sceptical because it feels just like another hype.
⛱️ We often joked with my former colleagues that some of our colleagues are chillers. Logically, the larger the organisation, the easier it is to hide yourself. Here are first-hand accounts of how some people get away with doing nothing at work—a typical management problem.
🛒 Berlin will get yet another grocery delivery service: Picnic from Amsterdam. They told me they intend to grow to 500 people in the coming year. Careers. What a space!
❤️ To fight the small d*** energy people on K’damm, they started to test Germany’s first noise camera! (🇩🇪) Fully support and hope for a big and aggressive deployment everywhere.
🚅 A lot of opportunity for your impact on public transport: Deutsche Bahn's struggles are well described in the Economist, and they are hiring massively. Berlin’s BVG also plans to hire 10k (🇩🇪) in the next five years; this year alone 2.3k, out of which 1k are drivers. BVG is surely more punctual than DB; they were on time 65.5% of the time in May.
💦 The Chamber of Commerce (IHK Berlin) and the Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht are hosting an Innovation Challenge for water management to fight water scarcity. If you have solutions or want to work on them, apply here.
🤑 Inflation in Berlin is slowing down and is driven by food prices, with a 15% yoy increase in May. (🇩🇪) Carrots cost double than last year, and other food items also saw significant price hikes. Energy, however, became cheaper overall, with gas down 4.5% and heating oil 31% cheaper. The unemployment rate (🇩🇪) was 8.9%, down 0.3% from April.
😔 Bad news: Taxfix (120, 20%), Coachhub (10%), McMakler (60, 8%) saying the real estate market is the worse ever; Hallhuber (Munich) is insolvent again; Tastillery, Aidhere (Hamburg), Boxbote (Augsburg), Expertlead (Berlin) insolvent.
Reddit choice of the week is this dashboard of the Berlin rental market in April 2023.
💬 Briefly: from BER you will also be able to fly directly to Washington; Lufthansa said its goal was to take over financially troubled Italian carrier ITA Airways in full; Siemens Gamesa agrees to sell Windar Renovables stake; Schmid Group (Ba-Wü) will go public in New York with $640M SPAC deal; Signal added fake icons possibility for the app itself; Netflix started to roll-out bans on password sharing; SellerX is acquiring Austin-based Elevate Brands and, as a result, “is set to become one of the world’s largest and most influential aggregators of e-commerce brands”; Vamos! app taken over by Jodel.
🎪 Here are the suggestions for events to attend in June from Exberliner.
🤯 Imagine being able to get energy from thin air. The new “Air-gen" technology offers a source of clean, continuous energy that is not dependent on the sun or wind. But, of course, serious scaling challenges exist.
⚡️ If not told otherwise, do not leave the U-Bahn stuck on tracks. One of the reasons is that you could get electrocuted, as discovered by one of these geniuses.

🤓 Timeless and useful
It is actually a tweet, but you should know about it. Noise is a secret destroyer of productivity. Results on music “are not 100% clear, but recent studies have found a negative impact on complex and creative tasks.” Try to work in silence.

Great issue, thank you. My suggestion is to name a few working student (Werkstudent) jobs too.
Thanks for soliciting feedback. I had a couple of suggestions:
1. Can you include product design/UX design jobs as well?
2. Full time and contract jobs?
3. Include Jobs that offer a visa sponsorship (or have in the past)?
