☕️ Coffee with Anne-Kathrin Gerstlauer
is no stranger to good writing. She has a great newsletter for writing improvements with a telling name: TextHacks. I’m a regular reader to work on my German. These are her suggestions for you:Weekly Filet - 10 years ago, I got my recommendations for surprising or niche articles from X/Twitter. Now I get them from the best-curated newsletter.
Think again by the psychologist Adam Grant - my Favorite book of 2023. You learn how to question your own beliefs and influence others (no, saying or shouting they are wrong or stupid does NOT change their opinion). He also writes a newsletter: I recently liked the post about the sandwich compliment and why you should no longer use it.
Speakerinnen - Now I have recommended two men. Shame on me. If you do not wanna be that person at your event, book your female speaker on this platform. If you are a female yourself, register yourself today (and don’t think you have nothing to say!).
🇩🇪 Berlin & Other good stuff
📴 I published an article on an experiment on decreasing screen time: Who else wants to cut their screen time? (You can still join our WhatsApp group or Telegram Channel.) I realised many of you didn’t sign up to read my philosophical interventions, so all the next Perspective will be a separate section with a separate subscription or only published on the website. Time will tell.
🚨 Don’t forget to participate and/or promote the Salary Trends survey. In English, German and some ideas to spread the word. Thanks 🙏🏼
💅 Share of non-Germans in Berlin grew to 24.4% by the end of 2023. Foreigners congregate: 16 different nationalities were #1 in 542 different planning areas. You can read more and explore the map of top nationality per “planning area” here. (🇩🇪)
😮 Tesla was accused that their factory in Grühheide was polluting water. Another setback after the recent non-binding referendum where residents voted against a planned expansion which would mean felling 250 acres of local forest. It reminds me of all the fights for the trees in Germany (Stuttgart, RWE and others).
🤓 Klarna was in the news this week. They plan to IPO later this year, cut their losses by 69% to €230M and bragged about their implemetation of AI Assistant which “handled 2.3 m customer service chats” and this mean it perfomed “the equivalent job of 700 full time agents.” AI will undoubtedly change many jobs, but its a pity he didn’t explain what kind of errands. (Twitter) I take it with a grain of 🧂.
🤖 To see which freelancing jobs were the most impacted by AI so far, you can check out the analysis of 5M freelancing jobs on Upwork by Henley Wing. Spoiler alert: It’s translation, writing and customer service.
🌬️ I was happy to see that the air in Berlin is not such a disaster. We are at #2060 worst worldwide based on historical ranking. I set the filter for Germany (#15 worst) for you to check around. The easiest is to use the “city” search bar far right.
🎥 The market is tough. Now what did Marta do to stand out? A video about herself - and a very good one. My bekannte did something similar ten years ago, but simpler, and it also worked wonders.
🤞 After I kind of promoted the Chief of Staff roles in the last issue, a reader sent me this great article about the function being obsolete in companies. You can decide for yourself. Handpicked Berlin won’t have a CoS. 😜
✅ I randomly discovered this chap using a neverending .txt file as a todo list and found the idea intriguining. So I set up something similar for myself in Notes and after a week of testing it really does work well. Here are also some good “How to manage” todos ideas from Zapier’s blog.
🎪 Here are 11 food events for your in March from Mit Vergnügen (🇩🇪) and a selection of best March events from Exberliner.
Reddit choices of the week are this advice on how to deal with a bad Schufa rating and a very long thread on industry “secrets” people know that most people don’t. 😳
💬 Briefly:
😔 Bad news: Lengoo (Berlin, translation software) bankrupt; Bumble -30%; according to Sifted fintech kevin failed to pay salaries to some employees - I featured them here a couple of times because they openly listed salary bands which they then didn’t pay? (👎)
Handelsblatt reported that Deutsche Bank staff seriously complained on their Intranet about the proposed changes to Home Office rules for more than 10k employees: max two days, down from three days. Related, a funny video (redirect to Twitter):
After a decade of speculation and investment, Apple gave up on the car. 🤷🏻♂️
DeepL, one of the best German tech companies, is expanding to the US via Austin. Careers.
Perfume retailer Douglas plans to IPO soon. (RT)
Top Amazon aggregator Thrasio, filed for bankruptcy to cut ~$500M of debt. I know we have two big aggregators in Berlin: SellerX and Razor Group. I wonder what’s going on there.
Flix reported growth in revenue (30% to €2B), EBIDTA (€97 to €104€M) and passengers (34% to 81M). They now operate in 43 countries and 5600 destinations. (HB) Talks of an IPO are surfacing again.
Nubank, a Brazilian neobank darling of W. Buffett himself, posted a $1B net profit in 2023. In the past they had positions open in Berlin but changed their minds?
Getir on the other hand, booked losses of €800M in 2023 according to Manager Magazin. (🇩🇪, €)
