☕️ Coffee with Nicolas Bouliane
You know him even if you think you don’t. Nico is the creator of All About Berlin, one of the cleanest, no-bullshit websites you’ll ever see. Sort of a Wikipedia for Berlin. This is what he has for you:
A brief history & ethos of the digital garden - I long-form for a cosy, personal, imperfect, work-in-progress web. I also love Maggie Appleton's illustrations.
How to do nothing - A quirky, meandering ode to experiencing the world at a slower pace.
An app can be a home-cooked meal - It's damn fun to build software when you eschew growth and scale. Software can be a love letter to a very small crowd.
🇩🇪 Berlin & Other good stuff
🇦🇹 I’ve done a review of Felix Austria’s Schnitzel on Instagram. Both gut gelungen.
🤖 My good friend Zim from the sister publication
is running this Telegram group to go to events together. It’s useful for whenever you feel like meeting new people at a good event. Speaking of which, we had a kegeln match this Saturday where Handpicked team allowed the opponents to win with 803 vs 784. One of the highlights was also catering from Kun (check out their Instagram):🍴 A lovely list from the official tourist blog of Berlin of 11 places with lunches for under 11€.
At the end of September, we were 3.775.414 people living in Berlin. RBB made a dashboard that lets you see which Kiez experienced the largest growth since 2012. Treptow-Köpenick won with +18.6%.
🚀 Renewables are rocketing! Enpal's revenue was €900M in 2023 (+117% YoY). 1KOMMA5°, the company driving everyone mad with their ° character, also saw revenue more than double to €460M in 2023 (+223% YoY), with operational profits (EBIT) of €50M. Enpal didn’t mention profits. This growth attracts competitors, so Aira, a Swedish heat pump startup, will expand into Germany after raising €145M with their heat pump subscription model. Wild growth rates, but are they sustainable?
🏟️ After reporting two profitable quarters in a row, Uber is on a naming spending spree in Berlin. As you probably heard, they’ll pay to rename Mercedes Benz Arena and Verti Music Hall to Uber Arena and Uber Eats Music Hall. Everyone talks about it, so it already seems like a good marketing stunt. Related, Bitpanda became an official crypto partner of FC Bayern. In general, buying naming rights isn’t a particularly bullish signal.
🇩🇪 Why Germany Is Rich But Germans Are Poor and Angry by Bloomberg is a great read. “The shared prosperity bit is partly a myth: Inequality is high by European standards and median net wealth of around €106,000 is well below the euro-area median of around €150,000.” The German economy was also the worst-performing major economy last year. So let’s take it positively: it can only improve!
🫣 Google is somehow struggling, and besides a lot of schadenfreude and calls for Pichai’s head, many grounded comments fly around. I liked this one (tweet) that paying employees 6-7 figure incomes to work on whatever they like can only be an anomaly. Similar from an insider (LinkedIn). Something needs to give.
🎙️ If you’d like to find a job in international relations in Berlin, this Redditor has some good suggestions, and as usual, learning German will get you places.
👌 I encourage you to read this essay with 6 points about career and life by Cate Hall, which did rounds last week. Great ideas, especially on embracing rejection.
r/berlin choices of the week is this maybe still relevant tip on how to walk on ice (bent knees, acting like a penguin). I would add to keep your hands outside of your pockets. From r/Germany I have this funny thread on German habits that make no sense. Winning an argument with doch is my winner.
💬 Briefly:
😔 Bad news: Sirplus -60; Google laid off more people; Wayfair (-13%) as well. They both have a presence here. Related, Wayfair’s CEO Niraj Shah told employees “to work longer hours” in his year-end e-mail. Sad.
Reddit is still planning to IPO in March, so expect more and more ads.
CVC Capital Partners is acquiring Berlin-based vitamin company Sunday Natural. GetSafe is taking over deinestudienfinanzierung, and Die Zeit is taking over majority of goodjobs jobs portal.
When a product promises a lot, it helps to read the fine print. Verbraucherzentrale Stuttgart accused (🇩🇪) Trade Republic of anti-competitive advertising of their “Saveback” product. Meanwhile, Lemon Market (Berlin) can start offering securities. Neo-broker space is getting tight.
Nokia will invest €360M in its Ulm and Nuremberg tech centers. Careers.
Lufthansa intends to hire 13k employees in 2024, 1k pilots and 3,5k cabin crew. Their ITA Airways stake faces EU competition inquiry.
Berlin-based Vay launched a remote-controlled car rental service in Las Vegas, where cars are driven to customers remotely. In Germany, they plan to test it in Hamburg. Careers.
