🇩🇪 Berlin & Germany
The Exploration Company, a Munich-based European answer to SpaceX, raised €40M Series A. Careers.
Sdui, a Koblenz/Berlin-based EdTech, raised a total of €25M in the extended Series A. Careers.
Maya Climate, a Berlin-based green projects financier, raised €1.2M pre-seed. Careers.
XbyX, a Berlin-based female HealthTech startup, raised seven figures. Careers.
Specter Automation, a Cologne-based construction tech company, raised €2.7M seed. No careers yet.
Based on the report from the
, Apple is getting strict with the Return-to-office policy. Maybe the power is shifting back to the employers? It appears you can only have two: “1. A well-known tech company, 2. Lots of flexibility on remote work, 3. Relatively good job security.” All three are a miracle?Swiss insurer Baloise invested in Tronity, a Manheim-based provider of solutions for EV owners. Careers (0 at the time).
Handelsblatt has an interesting paywalled profile of German Bionic (🇩🇪), an Augsburg-based company producing exoskeletons. So far, they have raised around €50M. Their product is production-ready and will set you back for almost 10k, but you will be lifting heavy stuff easier. They say they will break even without further financing. Careers (scroll down).
If you like beer, you need to get ready for further price increases. (€, 🇩🇪) Besides energy, inflation also hit the ingredients. According to Stefan Fritsche from Brauereiverband Berlin-Brandenburg, a beer in a bar would cost €7.5 by the end of the year if the increased cost is completely passed on. Well, Herr Fritsche is from a Verband, after all, so I take it with a grain of salt. Speaking of beer, I had one last week for €2.5 in “Zum Magendoktor” in Wedding.
Have you ever wondered if döner is a Spezialität (food speciality)? The administrative court says no. A Turkish chef sued because he did not get his visa approved and lost.
DeStatis, the Federal Statistics Office, reports that the hourly earnings of women are 18% lower than those of men. We have a long way to go. (And this link already got broken 3x, so sorry if it doesn’t work)
layoffs.fyi & other sources: Paypal (7%), Delivery Hero (156), Heycar (73, 16%), wefox (100).
r/berlin choice of the week: OP got an apartment after 484 applications and 13 viewings. Spoiler: they wrote a script. And if you are considering a bootcamp in Berlin, here is an excellent overview, which is probably also a blog post somewhere.
I support people being active and fighting for a cause, but I found the fact that the two Last generation activists did not show up for trial in Bad Cannstatt (Stuttgart) because they vacationed in Bali hilarious. I mean, come on, such a low-hanging fruit not to go to Bali at all or precisely at that time. It just increases the surface of the attack. But maybe they booked flights before becoming activists and did not want them to go to waste?
Here is also a possible Berghain love story with comments ranging from “wholesome” to “hey, it’s Molly. Take it easy.
🇪🇺 Rest of Europe & UK (Top 5)
Daniel Ek of Spotify made it official! He is going to HealthTech with Neko Health. Careers?
Powerfield, a Dutch solar play, raised €500M. Careers.
Jeff, a Valencia-based entrepreneurship-for-all company, raised €90M Series C. Careers.
Fairphone, an Amsterdam-based company with a straightforward name, raised €49M. Careers.
Recycleye, a London-based producer of sorting robots, raised $17M series A. Rubbish (their words!) careers here.
🤓 Timeless and useful
This is an essay about research work from Andy Matuschak, and I was so fascinated by some of the ideas that I read it 3x (especially the last parts).
It made me think that context-switching at work (jumping from one meeting to another with 30 min break) is a terrible waste of time. I also caught myself doing a lot of administrative tasks at home instead of doing the hard stuff for handpicked because they give you an impression you are doing something. Useful!
As always, with advice like this, there are no recipes, only inspiration.
😅 Meanwhile
someone got a rabbit.
This is a conversion rate 💸 footer fact for you. Apparently, the average direct conversion rate for Kardashians from one Instagram post is barely 0.004 (significantly less than at handpicked, huehue). At Kim’s 344 million followers, that's 13.760 purchases per post.
