📢 Shoutout
This week it’s Zaki Gulamani — a copywriter/one-person-agency who I met back in the early days of handpicked. Meanwhile, we had a couple of beers, and he is cool. Get in touch via his LinkedIn if you’re looking for someone, in Zaki’s words, “to crank your copy up a notch!”
Also, drop me an email if you do something cool too.
🗞 Top inspiration snippets
🇩🇪 Berlin & Germany
Taktile, Berlin-founded but NYC-hq’ed automated decisions making company, raised $20M Series A. Careers.
Faircado, Berlin-based second-hand ware browser extension, raised €500k. No careers.
CatalYm, Munich-based biotech working on cancer therapy, raised €50M Series C. Careers are only an email.
Temedica, Munich-based medtech startup, raised an additional €25M to its Series B (total of €42M). Careers.
Lilium, Munich-based air mobility company, raised an additional €119M to pay the bills. Funny, because they SPAC’d last year. If you invested 10, you have 1.45 left.
Flix, Munich-based bus&train transportation giant, is still not profitable, but this should soon change (€, 🇩🇪). Last year they bought Greyhound and also started in Brazil. Only time will tell if they are more on time than DB. Careers.
Everyone knows already that Getir wants to buy Gorillas, and Miriam & Tim from Sifted did a deeper dive into why. It’s real estate-related, and it also means a lot of burn. Who is drinking, and who is paying?
Just because it sounds cool… Berlin-based akirolabs was named 2022 Gartner® Cool Vendor™. Cool vendors are trademarked; now we know! Careers empty.
Meanwhile, Klarna’s CEO says they will be profitable next summer again after letting 10% of the people go. Better times for the Berlin-based team.
Check out Inidar, a website collecting all solidarity and mutual aid-related initiatives in Berlin. A great project!
Lufthansa is out of the big Corona crisis and wants to employ 20k people in 2023 (€, 🇩🇪). Phew. Check out their careers. You will be joining 107k other employees. Eurowings, its sister company, increased the number of flights from BER. Yeah, Helsinki, here I come!
🎄🧑🏼🎄 If Christmas markets are your thing, look no further. Here is what r/berlin thinks about the best ones, and here is a tool for you to find some. There are 63 in total. That is a lot of GLUEWEIN (I know I wrote it wrong).
no layoffs this week, as far as I could see.
😅 You are not gonna believe this, but Handelsblatt also made a list of the top 30 young people (€, 🇩🇪) that will CHANGE GERMANY. Yes! It would be cool to read a paper about the underlying methodology. We got some scale-ups in there (N26 & Personio).
🇪🇺 Rest of Europe & UK (Top 5)
ABB E-Mobility, Zurich-based EV charging company (part of ABB), raised €200M. Careers.
Modern Milkman, UK-based company delivering, guess what, raised £50M. Careers.
The Applied AI Company, UK-based, well, AI/ML company with presence in Berlin, raised $42M. No real Careers page yet.
Cobee, Madrid-based employee benefit startup, raised €40M. Careers.
Fairmat, France-based carbon fiber composite recycling company, raised €34M Series A. Careers.
🤓 Timeless and useful
I really liked the article and discussion around documentation vs meetings. So many different opinions mean that ten of us will have at least three ways to think about it. I wonder how many organisations put amazing documentation or efficient meetings on their values page?
I am a big fan of writing things down and will test Diátaxis framework, “sytematic framework for technical documentation authoring,” which was mentioned and praised in the comments.
😅 Meanwhile
the World Cup started.
(FYI, Infantino, FIFA is totally banned to advertise here!)
🕶 As promised last week: my killer restaurant idea. I would prepare 40 soups and 40 sandwiches per day. Top and seasonal ingredients. And with time, I’d get sold out immediately. But now I am doing this newsletter for you.
