📈 Salary Trends Section - Gender gap 🤨
I was finally able to finish the first deep dive. I had another look into the gender gap, which shows a sad picture and a clear pay advantage for men in the majority of categories. You can check the detailed data by leadership level, age, years of experience, education, and selected roles. Don’t forget the data bias and a grain of salt.

🇩🇪 Berlin & Other good stuff
💃🏼 We still have a couple of tickets available for our party on Saturday, the 1st of June. Get them while they’re still there! We’d love to see you join us! ❤️
The amazing POV footage of Anti-Tesla activists that broke through the police lines at the Grünheide factory. I'm not sure what the long-term plan is here, lads and lasses.
🌮 I’ve never tried it before, but Taco Bell will soonish be available in Berlin! Tex-Mex fans, beware of the Authentic Food Police™, which might be offended if you get too excited about the tacos. Speaking of tacos and Tex-Mex, I tried Munchies for the first time. I am happy to report they were added to the Handpicked map of Berlin.
⚔️ The Energiewende fight is coming to Berlin. 1Komma5° is, according to Tagesspiegel (€, 🇩🇪), planning to employ 200 mainly software engineers in Berlin (SHED in Neukölln). Besides everything renewable (solar panels, heat pumps), their main product is a household energy management system to optimize your strom production & spending (my simplified explanation: you should run all your appliances and charge your car on a sunny day!). Their main competitor is Enpal, which says their tech is better. Ok.
Meanwhile, the heat pump sales have dropped by 52% in Q1 and are now being heavily discounted. (FAZ, € 🇩🇪) Be careful with the hype, peeps!🇪🇺 Not sure who to vote for in the European election on the 9th? Wahl-o-mat comes to the rescue. 38 questions in German.
👀 The German real estate prices are still falling. You can read about it here (🇩🇪) and ask why they chose such bad colours for the chart. Berlin is, of course, a clear winner, which means the apartment you didn’t buy in 2008 appreciated the most.
Career: How to resolve a conflict at work? First, you need to decide if you are dealing with a cold or a hot one. The end goal should not be a compromise, “but rather bridging the divide and innovating new options or solutions.”
Career: A great tip: “Need to build a working relationship with someone new, quickly? Ask for their advice/feedback on something you’re working on. It’s an immediate sign that you respect and trust them. They’ll match that.”
Timeless: Kevin Kelly dropped another classic you should re-read once in a while, 101 Aditional Advices. For example,
- You have 5 minutes to act on a new idea before it disappears from your mind.
- The most common mistake we make is to do a great job on an unimportant task.
- What others want from you is mostly to be seen. Let others know you see them.Reddit choice of the week is a map of what Germany is called in different languages; comments are worth reading, too.
💬 Briefly:
😔 Bad news: April saw a 28.5% increase in corporate bankruptcy filings compared to last year, per the Federal Statistical Office. The rise in March was 12.3%.
ComX (Berlin, fintech) bankrupt. (deutsche-startups)VC market sentiment in Germany improved in Q1 2024, nearly offsetting the dip from Q4 2023. The early-stage business climate index is up by 6.7 points to -20.5. (KfW, 🇩🇪)
Bolt, a micro-mobility and Uber competitor, is expanding to the US. They secured a €220M credit line if needed. For sure needed.
BioNTech reported a Q1 net loss of €315M, down from €502M profit last year, due to declining COVID business and higher R&D costs. Revenue dropped to €187.6M from €1.27B. They need a product…. fast!
Zalando narrowed its Q1 pre-tax loss to €12.3M from €51.7M last year. EBIT turned positive at €0.7M. Revenue slightly down at €2.24B. Active customers dropped to 49.5M.
Lilium, one of the two German air taxi hopefuls, got a $150M credit line from investors. (Welt, 🇩🇪)

May be worth covering the EntgeltTransparenzGesetz so that women know their rights under it. It is imperfect, but it’s a start.
